The Story Behind The Child's Hope

The Child's Hope, an oil painting by Rita Miramontes of a mother holding her child beneath a protective spirit, with calla lilies and passion flowers

The Child's Hope and the Compassion of the Mother (La Esperanza del Niño y La Compasión de la Madre) is one of Rita's most personal paintings. In her words, it "reflects the strong love a mother has for her child. Her compassion overcomes adversity."

A Protective Spirit

Above the mother and child floats a protective spirit, wrapped in deep red and reaching over them both. It is a presence that watches and shelters, a reminder that no mother carries her child alone.

The Language of the Garden

Like much of Rita's work, the painting is set in the Paradise Garden, and every plant carries meaning:

  • The vine symbolizes the continuance of life through the generations.
  • The passion flowers speak of the mother's passion for her child.
  • The calla lilies stand for her desire for peace for her child.

You can read more about this symbolism in Paradise Garden: The Iconography of Rita Miramontes.

About the Painting

The original is an oil on canvas measuring 36" x 49.5", painted with the thick, textured palette knife strokes that bring Rita's surfaces to life.
