About Me

RITA MIRAMONTES

painter and muralist

Artist and Art Historian

I have Master of Fine Arts Degree (MFA) in Painting with a concentration in Art History and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (BFA) in Textile Design with a concentration in Drawing.  I am a painter and muralist. I have taught Art History, Color Theory, and a wide variety of Art and Humanities classes at East Tennessee State University, King University and North East State University in Tennessee.

Cultural Influences

At an early age I had the opportunity to visit the home of Mexican painter and muralist Arón Peña Mora.  While there, I wandered around exploring. I found myself alone in his studio with all his paintings. I saw the faces of the Indigenous people depicted on his many cavasses. That experience made an indelible impression on my life.  From that moment I knew I wanted to be an artist one day. My own cultural identity as a Mexican American was rooted there in Chihuahua, Mexico, in that place and moment in time.  My interest in the Indigenous people of Mexico was born that day.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products

Inspiration

My Mexican American heritage is a major inspiration and the main reason for my interest in Indigenous cultures and their cultural mythology, rituals and beliefs. Arón Peña Mora, Freida Kahlo, David A. Siqueiros, and Diego Rivera are the major artistic influences to my work along with the textural effects of De Bruges wood carvings. Miramontes means: look at the mountains. My Mother is my primary inspiration. Miramontes was her maiden name and my painting is dedicated to her.

Techniques

Aggressive strokes are used to produce flowing movement in the paintings.  Serrated and Palate Knives serve to create the deeply textural surfaces. Bold color juxtapositions, with rich vibrant brush work emphasize details and characterize the bold quality of the paintings. My idea is to make it feel as though the images come off the canvas. I often use large life size format to achieve an intimate personal connection between the viewer and the images. I want to invite you into the movement of the dance.

highlights

I founded a Student Art Gallery at King University in Bristol, Tennessee and sponsored several annual student art exhibits there. I also directed the production of collaborative community murals with under privileged students at Milligan College in Tennessee.
